KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued two successive thunderstorm warnings this morning, forecasting heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across several states.
In a Facebook posting earlier today, MetMalaysia said the 7.10am alert warned of thunderstorms affecting Perlis, Kedah and Penang, as well as parts of Perak (Kerian, Larut, Matang dan Selama, Hulu Perak, Manjung, Bagan Datuk, Hilir Perak and Muallim), Selangor (Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Klang, Petaling, Kuala Langat and Sepang) and the Federal Territory of Putrajaya, with conditions expected until 9am today.
A subsequent update issued at 8.35am expanded the warning to include Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak, as well as Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub and Bentong), Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and parts of Negri Sembilan (Jelebu, Seremban, Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah and Rembau), with adverse weather expected to persist until noon.
MetMalaysia said the warnings are issued when there are signs of thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour, either occurring or expected to occur for more than an hour.
It added that thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts, typically valid for not more than six hours per issuance.
