Kedah hit by flash floods after two-hour downpour, 17 homes affected in Bandar Baharu

ALOR SETAR, May 9 — A two-hour downpour resulted in flooding in several areas in Bandar Baharu district last night.

Bandar Baharu district disaster management committee secretariat spokesman, Lt (PA) Abdul Rahim Khairuddin said 17 hours were affected 11pm last night, and that the areas flooded included the subdistricts of Sungai Batu, Selama, Bagan Samak and Serdang.

“Twelve homes are in Kampung Sungai Tengas, two in Kampung Air Itam Dalam and one each in Kampung Cherok Meranti, Kampung Paya Salak and Kampung Batu Hampar,” he said in a statement last night, adding that seven families are being housed at the relief centre at Dewan KEDA Sungai Tengas.

Meanwhile, he said that the water level at Sungai Tengas was rising while Sungai Air Itam Dalam and Kampung Cherok Meranti were dropping.

The water levels of Sungai Terunsing and Sungai Terap Dalam were at danger levels, while the water level of Sungai Punti was still normal, he added. — Bernama
