KUALA LUMPUR, Sep 11 — Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said he will not heed calls to vacate his Muar MP seat after announcing the party’s withdrawal from the unity government.
Syed Saddiq said those who need to vacate the parliamentary seats are Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders as he alleged that they are the ones who broke the pledge to fight corruption.
He stressed that he did not betray his promise to the voters in the 15th general election (GE15).
“If I need to vacate the seat just because of fighting corruption, I suggest those MPs or the ministers who said as such to get a mirror.
“They need to vacate their seats too. Since when they were elected to ignore corruption? Are you ready to vacate the seats too?” he was quoted as saying in Malay daily Sinar Harian.
Syed Saddiq said that the reforms promised by PH have been stonewalled following the ‘release’ of Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi from his corruption charges.
“What is the platform we are fighting for? Before the GE we promised to not ignore corruption, we said we would fight corruption and bring reforms.
“But what was promised before the GE is way too different now,” he was quoted as saying.
Earlier, PKR youth head of information Haziq Azfar Ishak in a statement urged Syed Saddiq to vacate the Muar Parliament seat and run again as an Independent candidate.
This he said because Syed Saddiq’s victory for the seat was not based on his own capacity but on the spirit of Muda as an electoral alliance with PH.
“It is well known that the victory of the Muar parliamentary seat was contributed by the strength of PH’s support, machinery and influence.
“His failure to vacate the seat is an act of hijacking the Muar Parliament seat by making it a third force and a betrayal to the mandate of the people in the Muar Parliament who chose Parti Muda as an electoral alliance with PH,” he was quoted as saying.
