PUTRAJAYA, Aug 15 — DAP vice-chairman Nga Kor Ming has today said that the party's alliance with Umno is on the right track, amid scepticism following Barisan Nasional's (BN) losses in the six state elections.
He cited the results of the Negeri Sembilan election where Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Umno won 31 seats out of the 36 seats contested as an illustrative example of the successful collaboration between the once-arch rivals.
“We can clearly see that the cooperation between Umno and DAP is on the right track based on how well we did in Negeri Sembilan.
“To the extent that Umno also almost won every seat it contested there, it’s a little more only for the two-third majority,” he told reporters after the pre-launch ceremony of the Local Government Development Minister and Media Excellence Award 2023 here.
He said the cooperation of the two parties in Selangor and Penang also helped to maintain the existing state government as it was before the last election.
"This is the beginning of a good collaboration and it is in a positive position.
"Don't forget that we have only 'married' and become friends within eight months, so give us four or five years and I am confident that the Unity Government will become stronger, more stable and towards excellence,” he said referring to the PH-BN coalition.
Earlier, Umno Supreme Council member Isham Jalil demanded that the Umno leadership reconsider cooperation with DAP to avoid the sacred party of the Malays disappearing in the upcoming 16th General Election.
Umno's state election outcome showcased a mere victory in 19 out of the 108 state seats it contested, mirroring its lacklustre performance during the 15th general election last November.
During that election, the party managed to secure success in only 26 out of the 120 constituencies it contested.
When asked about what lies ahead for the government after PH and BN struggle to get Malay votes, Nga expressed the need for careful consideration and post-election analysis to inform subsequent actions.
"I think it is very important that we respect the choices in a democratic country and respect the choices made by the people.
“The government will do a post-mortem and then we will focus on our work,” he said.
He also emphasised the government's commitment to address key priorities.
"We will focus on building up the economy to make people's lives easier," he stated, reaffirming the government's dedication to enhancing the quality of life for all citizens.
