KUCHING, June 22 ― Kota Samarahan will be the location of Borneo’s first major data centre.

A project of Sarawak-Singapore consortium FutureData Sdn Bhd, involving Sarawak-based TSG Group and Singaporean technical partner Cyclect Group, the carbon neutral 200 megawatt (MW) green data centre will utilise energy-efficient technologies and be part of a FutureGreen district mixed development township.

“The time has come for us to further explore the potential for Sarawak by tapping into the positive outlook of the domestic data centre industry and the rising demand for cloud services in the region,” TSG Group group chief executive officer Datuk Chris Chung said during the new consortium’s launch last night.

The launch was held during the Shape the World Summit 2023 gala dinner here.

Without specifying a timeline, Chung said the data centre will be constructed based on a build-to-suit model and will offer flexible solutions that enable international partners to design and customise the facility and operations in order to meet different needs.

On the FutureGreen district, Chung said project entails an integrated green district whereby healthcare, education, and high-end residential for international residents seeking a second home in Kuching are powered by green infrastructure.

He said the district aims to implement a circular economy and produce green energy from each household that can be channelled back to the electricity grid.

“It will be green living by systems design covering from power, lifestyle, recycling, and also how a Sarawakian version of green lifestyle can truly take shape. It will require a shift in mindsets and behaviours,” he said.

Among those present at the gala dinner were Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Hipni, Deputy State Secretary Datu Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, Cyclect Group managing director Melvin Tan, and organising chairman Lawrence Chong. ― Borneo Post
