KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — The Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) has decided to transfer the governance of para swimming from the Malaysia Swimming Federation (MAS) to the Malaysian Para Swimming Association (Prepma) beginning yesterday.

Prepma, in a statement today, said this alignment of governance was made in response to international developments and the government’s call to review the focus on swimming and be prepared for international affiliation when international federations are formed before the end of 2026.

“In Malaysia, para athletics has its own association known as Malaysia Para Athletics Association and is all ready for membership with a new International Para Athletics Federation in the near future.

“Para swimming has been under the care of MAS, which is internationally aligned to World Swimming Federation (FINA), a body not associated with para swimming sports,” Prepma said.

Prepma’s registration was approved by the Sports Commissioner on Nov 3 last year, and it has seven affiliates, namely Kedah, Penang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Johor and Sarawak.

Prepma president Datuk Seri Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin was reported to have said the formation of the association was in line with the instructions of the International Paralympic Committee for each country to establish its own national association. — Bernama
