KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — The authorities in Thailand have launched a search for a young Malaysian woman who has been missing since her last known whereabouts in the northern Chiang Rai province bordering Myanmar.
Angie Chong Sum Yee, 22, last sent her family pictures taken on June 1 during a visit to Mae Sai town in Chiang Rai, which is close to Myanmar’s Tachilek town, The Bangkok Post reported today.
Chong’s mother, Chee Choy Wen who is from Johor, has not been able to contact her since and fears her daughter may have crossed into Tachilek, Myanmar and be in danger.
According to the news report, Chong flew to Chiang Mai solo on May 29 and had sent her mother pictures of various places there and in Chiang Rai.
The Thai daily reported that its country’s immigration and tourist police have contacted Myanmar officials at the Tachilek checkpoint.
The Myanmar officials were reportedly asked to look at security camera recordings to see if Chong had crossed the border to Tachilek, where there are many large casinos and business complexes where many people from Thailand and other countries work.
Checks on social media show Chong is from Johor but works in Kuala Lumpur.
