KUCHING, May 3 — Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg today assured Buddhists in the state that his government will continue to ensure their rights and religious freedom as well as the interests of all other groups are maintained.
He said the establishment of the Unit for Other Religions is part of efforts to strengthen the policy of inclusion which not only aims to provide financial assistance but also includes efforts to unite communities of various religions and races in this state.
“In conjunction with the Wesak Day this year, I sincerely hope that all Buddhists in Sarawak will continue to strive to strengthen the relationship between races and religions,” Abang Johari said in a statement.
Wesak, which is tomorrow, is considered the most important date by Buddhists in commemoration of the birth, enlightenment and death of their founder Gautama Buddha.
Abang Johari extended his best wishes to all Buddhists throughout Sarawak in conjunction with the Wesak Day celebration.
“May this festival bring peace, happiness and prosperity to all Buddhists and harmony to Sarawak and all its people,” he said.
