KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 — Merlimau assemblyman Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has taken an unassailable lead in the contest to be the Umno Youth chief, according to the wing’s outgoing leader Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

On Twitter, Asyraf said the Melaka state lawmaker has already secured 102 votes — more that the 96 needed for a simple majority — with some divisions still to be counted.

The votes put him well clear of challengers such as former deputy minister Datuk Shahar Abdullah, Senator Arman Azha Abu Hanifah, and Meor Hassan Mat Ali.

Aside from Umno Youth, the party’s Wanita and Puteri wings also voted for their leaders today.

In the contest for the Wanita chief’s post, incumbent Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad has taken a slim lead against Tan Sri Shahrizat Jalil who is seeking to make a comeback.

Voting for the three vice presidents’ posts and 25 supreme council members will take place on March 18, concluding the election.

During the party’s general assembly this year, delegates voted to prohibit challenges against party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his deputy, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
