GEORGE TOWN, Feb 17 — The heads of government in Penang, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu will meet next week to discuss a suitable date to dissolve their respective legislative assemblies, paving the way for state elections this year.

The confirmation was made by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow today who said it was Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari who initiated the joint meeting.

“We will meet next week and discuss when to dissolve the respective state assemblies to pave the way for state polls,” he told reporters after launching the Augmented Reality Park at Armenian Park here.

He said the timeframe for the respective states to dissolve the state assemblies is getting narrower.

“Even without doing all that, it will happen in June or July,” he said.

The six states opted not to hold concurrent polls when the 15th general election was held on November 19 last year, saying they would prefer to do it closer to the expiry of their five-year mandates between May and August this year.

Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan are controlled by Pakatan Harapan, which is part of the federal ruling government.

Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu are controlled by PAS, which is a component of the Perikatan Nasional coalition that is in the Opposition in Parliament.
