IPOH, Feb 16 — The contract of local government council members, who were appointed by the previous government, will be terminated with immediate effect starting from today, said Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

Saarani said a total of 286 new local government council member has been appointed today, which will be effective from February 16, 2023 to February 15 next year.

“Of that amount, a total of 215 or 75 per cent of the appointed council members are male, while 71 or 25 per cent are female,” he told a press conference after the Hari Bertemu Pelanggan programme at the Stadium Indera Mulia here.

For the remaining 39 council members, Saarani said the names will be proposed in phase two of the appointment.

Saarani said the appointees are from the parties of the ruling government namely from Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional.

“The proposal to fill the quota of 325 council members this year is subjected to the terms of appointment as stipulated in the guideline for the appointment of local government council members in 2023.

“According to the guidelines, the candidates must meet the eligibility requirements including being between 18 and 65 years old, in good physical health and not having criminal record or disciplinary action,” he said.

Saarani also said the age limit for the appointment of council member has been amended to the age of 18 due to voting age which now starts at the age of 18.
