KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16 — The Film Censorship Board of Malaysia (LPF) will reportedly be changing the film rating system by adding two new ratings, while doing away with the need for parental supervision under the “P13” category.
The Malaysian Insight (TMI) today cited a government gazette published last week, where Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the new system will be enacted via the Film Censorship Act 2022.
“These regulations come into force on February 1, 2023,” he reportedly said.
One of the new categories will reportedly be for those under the age 12, while the other will be for viewers aged 16 and above.
The “U” rating and the “18” rating will reportedly remain the same.
TMI reported that LPF chairman Dusuki Ya’acob had declined to comment further.
It also reported that an anonymous spokesman said Saifuddin would be making an announcement at a later date.
According to TMI, from January 2012 to the present day, there were only three ratings: “U”, “P13”, and “18”.
“U” means that the film is suitable for all ages, “P13” means that parental supervision is needed for children aged under 13, while “18” means the movie is only suitable for those aged 18 and above.
