SEBERANG PERAI, Jan 13 — The Education Ministry will be calling for new tenders to complete work on 17 “sick” schools in the country.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said work on these schools was delayed due to a shortage of workers.

“These schools were already built but works were postponed due to a shortage of workers so we will now go ahead with a new tender process to complete the works on these schools,” she said in a press conference after visiting two schools in Nibong Tebal here.

The “sick” schools included newly constructed and redeveloped schools where completions have been delayed.

She said the 17 schools included several in Sabah and Sarawak.

“Works on these schools are already at 90 per cent completion so we will try to complete it soon to be able to open these schools and take in students,” she said.

She hopes that work on the schools will complete by this year.

Earlier, Fadhlina visited SMK Sungai Acheh in Tanjong Berembang here and announced an allocation of RM300,000 for the school.

“The allocation is for the school’s canteen maintenance works and other facility maintenance projects that they have put on hold due to lack of funds,” she said.

When she visited SK Keledang Jaya in Changkat, she announced an allocation of RM250,000 for the school’s maintenance projects.

Fadhlina, who is also Nibong Tebal MP, also visited SJKT Ladang Bryam during her official trip here.

She said her official visits to the schools were to look into the conditions of the schools and understand any issues the schools had.

“This is to ensure there are no communication problems between the education department and the schools in terms of infrastructure and facilities,” she said.
