KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 6 — Melaka DAP chairman Damian Yeo Shen Li has resigned from his state party post, citing work commitments.
The former Duyong state assemblyman said his decision to step down as the Melaka DAP chairman has been communicated to the party’s state chapter’s committee.
“I have informed the (Melaka DAP) committee about my decision. They accepted and respected my decision,” Yeo told Free Malaysia Today (FMT).
The 47-year-old lawyer and managing partner of Messrs Damian SL Yeo & LC Goh said he had expressed his intention to relinquish the post during the party’s state committee meeting last Tuesday.
He added that his desire to resign had been expressed on previous occasions before, but the committee had managed to persuade him to carry on.
Yeo, who is also known as Baba Yeo (reflecting on his Melaka Baba heritage), explained that he was unable to attend numerous programmes as the Melaka DAP chairman due to work commitments.
“I am stepping down for the good of the party,” he was quoted saying.
However, Yeo did not name his immediate replacement and successor for the vacant post.
He said the matter would be discussed by the party’s state committee by next week.
Despite Yeo’s resignation, he will still remain as a Melaka DAP committee member and the head of its legal bureau.
Yeo was appointed as the Melaka DAP chairman in 2021 following the resignation of Tey Kok Kiew.
In the Melaka state election in 2021, Yeo failed to defend the Duyong state seat. He lost to Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem by a thin majority of 200 votes.
