KUCHING, Dec 24 — In his Christmas message today, Deputy Sarawak Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah reminded Christians here to adhere to the health practices in place set by the Ministry of Health when they celebrate the festive occasion with joy and merriment and not turn it into sorrow and mourning later.

He said as chairman of the state Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) he would shirk his duty if he failed to remind all that whatever occasions of joy and merriment the people celebrate, they should not throw caution to the wind.

“Let us observe all the health practices in place. The relapse [in positive cases] in China is a lesson best learnt.

“Let us celebrate responsibly to avoid turning our celebrations into sorrow or mourning later on,” he said.

He said the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s health and community medicine expert Prof Dr David Perera has regularly reminded those with comorbidities and those yet to have the booster shots to get them to be protected.

“Let his advice not go to waste,” Uggah said.

He urged the people to use Christmas to again reaffirm their commitment to racial harmony, tolerance and unity by visiting the open house of the Christians.

“Let us share in their joys and happiness like they appreciate and enjoy ours,” he said, telling the public to pray for continuing peace, harmony, well-being and prosperity in the state.

He said the state government under Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg is continuing the policy of freedom of religion in Sarawak, not only allowing other religions to be practised but is also generously assisting them to grow and develop.

“So let racial and religious harmony and tolerance continue to be our Sarawak very hallmark and be the very foundation for it to remain strong, united, harmonious and progressive,” he said.
