KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 17 — Following yesterday’s tragic landslide near the border of Pahang, Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman has urged the state government to review all hillside projects that is at risk immediately to avoid another disaster.
The DAP lawmaker said that safety precautions were imperative now especially since the country is now in the monsoon season.
“Every relevant agency and department needs to examine their projects which are located on hillsides or slopes,” she said in a statement.
Young Syefura also appealed to local accommodation providers to be more aware of their surroundings and the property’s land.
“I hope that local entrepreneurs take up the responsibilities to ensure there are no cracks or early signs of earth movement around their land.
“Other spots like coastal area and riversides also need to be wary of any changes, not just eye profits to the point of ignoring risks,” she said.
Young Syefura had earlier visited the site in Batang Kali where the landslide took place early yesterday morning, killing at least 21 people, while 12 are still missing.
“I also hope that the Jalan Batang Kali-Genting Highlands road can be repaired and opened up to the public soon.
“This road is the main connection for those working in Batang Kali and its surroundings to get to Genting where they are working. If the road is closed for a long period, they will face problems getting to work as the alternative route is rather far, taking up more time and costs of fuel and toll.
“So we are hoping that the Works Department can repair the road as soon as possible for the people’s convenience,” she said.
Young Syefura earlier expressed condolences to the families of the victims of the landslide after her visit with Ketari state assemblyman Thomas Su Keong Siong where she was briefed on the search and rescue efforts.
“We pray the the SAR goes smoothly and they find the victims,” she said.
