JOHOR BARU, Dec 12 — Police have arrested a couple, in connection with the death of a newborn, after her body was found in a drain at Kampung Melayu Pandan here yesterday.
Seri Alam acting police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohd Roslan Mohd Tahir said police were informed of the incident after the baby’s body was discovered by a 33-year-old woman at 11.50am yesterday.
At the same time, he said, the police also came across a 39-second video that recorded the discovery of the body.
“Acting on information, a team from the Seri Alam district police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested a couple between 1pm and 1.30pm yesterday.
“The man and woman, aged 27 and 28, were identified as from the Kampung Melayu Pandan area and both work as factory operators,” said Mohd Roslan a statement today.
Mohd Roslan said investigators also seized a purple T-shirt and a green sarong, as well as two mobile phones and 42 pills involving four types of medicine.
He said the two suspects did not have any previous criminal records.
“Investigators are still determining the baby’s cause of death that has been classified under Section 318 of the Penal Code,” he said.
Section 318 of the Penal Code deals with the crime of secretly burying or otherwise disposing of the dead body of a child, whether such child dies before or after or during birth. The offence is punishable by a maximum of two years’ imprisonment, or a fine, or both.
Mohd Roslan said both suspects are currently in police custody and have been remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code for four days starting today until December 15.
