IPOH, Dec 9 — Perak police seized nearly 100kg of drugs worth around RM3.5 million after arresting a man here during the Special Ops Tapis held for three days in several areas in Perak from December 6 to 8.

State Police Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said that the suspect was arrested at a house in Jalan Medan Ipoh here on Wednesday at around 1.40pm.

“Upon raiding the house, we found 95 tea packets containing suspected substances of methamphetamine drugs weighing 96.020 grams.

“The worth of the drugs seized is RM3,456,720 million,” he told a press conference at the Perak Police Headquarters here.

He said that the drugs which were seized are suspected to be distributed in the area around Ipoh and Klang valley and are sufficient for 120,000 drug addicts.

Mohd Yusri said that the suspect aged 37, who is an illegal betting bookie, tested negative for drugs and has a previous criminal record also related to drugs.

“The suspect has been remanded for seven days until December 11,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B Dangerous Drug Act 1952, which carries a mandatory death sentence if convicted.

Separately, Mohd Yusri said police have also arrested a total of 518 individuals, including eight women, around Perak on the same Ops Tapis.

He also said there were 21 foreigners from the arrest — five Myanmar nationals, nine Indonesian, six Thailand citizen and one Indian citizen.

“All the suspects are aged between 16 and 70 years old,” he said.

He said that 64 individuals were arrested for supplying drugs,119 for possessing drugs while the balance 319 are drug addicts and are investigated under Section 15(1) (a) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.

“From the arrested individuals, police have also identified seven hardcore drug addicts, who will be taken action under Section 39C of the same Act, which carries imprisonment between five to seven years and not more than three whippings,” he said.

Mohd Yusri also said that police seized 832.89 grams of heroin, methamphetamine (96,286.08 grams), ganja (46.88 grams), ketum leaves (10,500 grams), 39.85 litres of ketum liquids and 0.06 litres of codeine liquids in the operation.

“The total worth of the drugs that were seized is RM3,515,322.60 million.

“We also confiscated one car, five motorcycles and cash amounting to RM28,546,” he said.
