KOTA KINABALU, Nov 19 ― Personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services Department did double duty today to ferry voters from Sook, a district in the interior of Sabah, from their villages to the polling station and back again after the roads in between became submerged in water from heavy rains.
The department said the firemen were deployed after it received reports that the rain has washed out the roads to Sekolah Kebangsaan Rancangan Belia Sook.
The armed forces, civil defence, and police were also deployed to some locations in the area to assist voters who were affected by the disaster.
“The situation is now under control and all the polling centres are running smoothly,” an official from the Fire and Rescue Services Department said.
Lorries and four-wheel drive vehicles were used to ferry the voters to and from the polling station.
Earlier reports indicated that the water level of the main road in the area was as high as a grown man’s waist, although the polling station itself was unaffected.
The water later receded, enabling voters to go out and cast their ballots.
Other areas in Pensiangan like Kg Magulasing and Kg Lima in Nabawan were also reported to have been hit by flash floods after last night’s rain.
