SHAH ALAM, Nov 1 — Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said he is not a newbie in Gombak where he will be contesting for the federal parliamentary seat, and hopes to be first past the post there on November 19.
Speaking to the press after visiting the Klang River flood mitigation project here, Amirudin said he wants to win back the seat for Pakatan Harapan (PH), from its incumbent Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.
Amirudin, however, admitted that it would be “quite challenging” should he face off with Azmin, who is his predecessor as the Selangor mentri besar.
He also said the contest might be complicated by the entry of other political parties into the fray too, making a head-to-head battle seem unlikely.
“Every seat is very challenging in Malaysia now. I think generally every seat is very challenging for every candidate because the situation is a bit fluid. It is no longer two big parties. Now, there are multiple parties contesting and everybody has to show their strengths and their abilities to convince the voters and make sure the voters cast their votes on the polling day.
“So it is quite challenging and I am facing an incumbent, but I am not new in Gombak and we hope that we can pull our shots and make sure that we can win and return Gombak to PH in the election,” the Sungai Tua state assemblyman said.
Azmin, who is also the caretaker senior minister of international trade and industry, previously stated his desire to defend the seat in the coming general election (GE15).
He is currently a supreme council member in Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), which is a component of Perikatan Nasional (PN). PN will be announcing its GE15 candidates tonight.
