KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 14 — Malaysia recorded 4,097 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

This brings the total number of Covid-19 cases in the country to 2,699,240 since the pandemic began.

In a statement later, he said that out of the 4,097 new cases today, 4,079 were locally transmitted at 93.7 per cent or 3,821 cases, while 258 cases or 6.3 per cent were between foreigners.

There were also 18 imported cases between 15 Malaysians and three non-Malaysians.

Of the total, 86 people or 2.1 per cent were in Category 3, 4 and 5, which require hospitalisation.

The remaining 4,011 or 97.9 per cent are in Category 1 and 2, which require only quarantine.

As for those being treated in intensive care units (ICU), Dr Noor Hisham said that there are currently 382 patients, with 330 of them confirmed for Covid-19 and the remaining 52 are suspected, probable or under investigation for Covid-19.

“Of the 382 patients, 201 of them currently need ventilators to help them breathe, with 144 of them Covid-19 positive and 57 are suspected, probable or under investigation for the deadly disease,” he said

Dr Noor Hisham added that six new Covid-19 clusters were also detected in the country over the past 24 hours.

This brings the number of active clusters in the country to 245.

On a brighter note, 4,301 people have recovered from Covid-19 today, higher than the number of new cases.

This brings the total number of recovered cases to 2,610,610 or 96.7 per cent.
