KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 — Sungai Kandis assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei has died, according to Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.

The economic affairs minister announced the PKR representative’s death on Twitter this morning.

“Al fatihah. I am deeply saddened over the loss of a true comrade. May the soul of the late Shuhaimi Shafiei be placed in heaven with Allah’s graces,” he wrote.

Shuhaimi, 50, had once been Azmin’s political secretary.

According to Tanjung Sepat assemblyman Borhan Aman Shah, Shuhaimi had been suffering from stage four lymphoma.

Borhan, who is the political secretary to the Selangor mentri besar, confirmed Shuhaimi’s death at the Subang Jaya Medical Centre at 11.10am today.

“His remains will be buried at the Section 21 Muslim cemetrey in Shah Alam after Asar prayers this evening,” Borhan said in a statement.

His death will trigger a by-election in Sungai Kadis, the country’s first since the general election.

In the 14th general election, Shuhaimi won the seat by a landslide with a 12,480-vote majority over second-placed Kamaruzzaman Johari from Barisan Nasional in a four-cornered fight.
