IPOH, May 6 — Barisan Nasional’s candidate for Ipoh Timor parliamentary seat Kathleen Wong Mei Yin said she will never resort to mudslinging against her opponent merely to get support.
Instead, the 41-year-old consultant prefers to present voters with what she and her coalition can offer to the community.
“I am not going to slander or promote hatred. The election is about a choice for the people to choose who they want as their voice.
“There is no need for me to talk down on my opponent as voters here can judge for themselves.
“We are all seeking the people’s support, why make it ugly?” she said.
The Ipoh Timur Wanita MCA chief said an elected representative’s role is to serve and represent the community.
“We are all here to fulfill the voters’ aspiration.
“I do not want to make enemies with my opponent, in fact, I want to be able to sit down with them after the election.”
Wong said she hopes to bring positive changes to Ipoh if she is elected on May 9.
“Opposition parties are fighting about national issues and changing the federal government while we in Barisan are talking about community and positiveness.”
She said voters here want a better life, improved living standard and proper public amenities.
“If Barisan wins, I will have town hall sessions to engage with the stakeholders on what they want. I will spend the term carrying the voice of voters,” she said.
Barisan last held Ipoh Timur in 1999 before it fell to the Opposition in 2004.
Wong said during Barisan’s time, all markets in the city were upgraded.
“We even had a flood mitigation project in Taman Hock Lee which eventually solved flood problems in the surrounding area.”
In the 13th general election, Wong lost to Thomas Su Kiong Siong of DAP with 34,000 majority.
This time, Wong will face Perak DAP secretary Wong Kah Woh in a straight fight.
There are a total of 91,486 voters with 72.01 per cent of them Chinese, 21 per cent Malay, 6.4 per cent Indian.
