KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 — A warehouse clearance sale of discounted Apple products at MyTown mall in Cheras was cancelled due to overwhelming support.

There was a mad rush to MyTown in the early hours with thousands of Malaysians turning up to queue in the hope of landing a dated iPhone model for as low as RM200. Many had camped outside overnight.

But before Apple product reseller Switch, who hosted the event, had even opened, there were already chaotic scenes outside.

Attempts to organise an orderly queue were futile.

No sooner had the event started than Switch announced that due to safety concerns, the store would be closed for the day.

The Facebook post also listed a number of items that had sold out instantly.

Social media users let their frustration be known and accused Switch of over-publicising the clearance sale with such limited stock available.

Posters for the event published earlier this week however did state the number of units available for each item.

A MacBook Air 11-inch 64gb 2011 model, for example, was going for RM500, but there was only one unit available.

The aforementioned iPhone, a 16gb 5s model, only had nine units available.

Most shoppers left empty handed.

The event was supposed to last all weekend.
