KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7 — Coming from tropical Malaysia, figure skater Julian Yee is rather disadvantaged in preparing for the 2018 Winter Olympics that will kick off Friday in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

But the 20-year-old has got his own special spot to train when in the country: the ice rink at the Sunway Pyramid shopping mall in neighbouring Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

The five-time Malaysian senior national champion who took gold in the figure skating event at the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur is usually found there when the mall is closed for the day.

In conjunction with his past achievement, the Olympic Channel released a nine-minute video on how Yee grew up, fell in love with the sport and a few aerial shots from his practice sessions at the shopping mall.

Yee and alpine ski racer Jeffrey Webb are Malaysia’s first two athletes to compete in the Winter Olympics.

Right now, they are in South Korea to prepare for the Games and Yee has admitted he is a bundle of nerves.

“I’m excited, scared and happy. It might probably change every day, especially inching closer to the Games,” he was quoted saying by New Straits Times on its website.
