KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 ― The government has always given extra focus on the management of Pulau Pisang lighthouse and will not hesitate to take action against any element that can post a threat to the country’s sovereignty, Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said.
“Pulau Pisang belongs to Johor government. The British administration was only given the consent to build, operate and maintain the lighthouse in Pulau Pisang based on the written agreement or 'indenture' signed by the late Sultan Ibrahim and dan Governor of the Straits Settlements Sir James Alexander Swettenham on October 6, 1900, and the tasks had been taken over by the Singapore government until today.
“The Singapore government and its nationals who were deployed to operate and maintain the lighthouse must, at all time, adhere to the regulations set by the Malaysian government, including to register with the Immigration Department in Kukup, Johor, every time they check in or check out during their shifts.”
He said this when winding up the debate on the Supply Bill 2018 at the policy level for his ministry at the Dewan Rakyat sitting yesterday.
For the record, even though Pulau Pisang is under Malaysia’s sovereignty, the lighthouse is managed by the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore. ― Bernama
