KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 — PAS today offered solidarity to political rival in the DAP-led Penang government and said it would mobilise its members to help with disaster relief efforts following floods and strong winds that devastated the island state.
Party deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said PAS was willing to put aside political differences with DAP to help those in need, adding that unity was crucial to ensure civilian lives are protected in times of disaster.
“We offer our condolences to the Penang government… disasters which are human-made can happen anywhere and to anyone,” the PAS leader said in a statement.
“In a critical situation, all parties must put aside their differences and focus on helping the victims,” he added.
PAS will mobilise its entire grassroots machinery to help with the relief efforts, Tuan Ibrahim said.
At the same time DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) has pleaded for members of the public to help the flood victims by donating food and water to a collection centre in Ipoh, Perak.
“Those who wish to help donate dry food and mineral water can do so by sending them to the collection centre at the DAP Perak headquarters at No. 48, Medan Istana 1, Bandar Ipoh Raya, Ipoh (05-2531532).
“DAPSY teams will then send the supplies to the flooded locations starting today,” the wing said in a statement.
The first team had sent the supplies at 2pm while another is expected to depart for Penang at 6pm. Ipoh is about two hours away from Penang.
While formerly allies, DAP and PAS are now archrivals after the two had a fallout over the latter’s push for hudud laws in Kelantan.
