NILAI, Oct 22 — The remains of YTL Corporation Bhd founder Tan Sri Dr Yeoh Tiong Lay were laid to rest at the Xiao En Memorial Park at 4.40pm today.
The founder of the giant conglomerate died on Wednesday at the age of 88.
The hearse bearing his remains arrived at the cemetery at 3.15pm. The funeral procession comprised 40 cars and eight buses.
About 1,000 people, comprising family members and friends were present at the funeral. However, due to health issues, his wife Tan Kai Yong could not be present.
All present observed silence for two minutes followed by wreaths placed near his final resting place.
Among the dignitaries present were Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili, IOI Group executive chairman Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng, Lion Group Malaysia chairman Tan Sri William Cheng, Cambodian Ambassador to Malaysia, Princess Norodom Arunrasmy.
The funeral ceremony started at 10am at the family residence in Lorong Buloh Perindu 1, Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur, which was attended by about 3,000 people.
Prior to this, more than 12,000 people turned up to pays their last respects over the past four days at the family’s home.
Yeoh was also YTL Corporation and YTL Power International executive chairman.
Besides his wife, he leaves behind seven children namely, Tan Sri Dr Francis Yeoh Sock Ping, Datuk Yeoh Soo Min, Datuk Dr Victor Yeoh Seok Kian, Datuk Yeoh Seok Hong, Datuk Seri Michael Yeoh Sock Siong, Datuk Yeoh Soo Keng, Datuk Mark Yeoh Seok Kah, 27 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
YTL Corp is among the 30 biggest companies listed on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia, forming one of the component companies of the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI, the stock exchange’s primary benchmark index.
Yeoh started his empire at the age of 22, when he completed his first project and made RM5,000 profit, which was regarded as very good at that time, in the 1950s.
Since then, he continued his career in the construction sector and expanded the presence of the YTL Group in other sectors whereby it is now one of the biggest conglomerates listed on the Malaysian bourse with business interests in construction, power generation, hotels, property development and telecommunications. — Bernama
