KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 — A survey on how Malaysians use electricity unearthed some interesting facts about us.

For example, we like clean clothes as more than 53 per cent of the 7,688 surveyed said they do laundry more than twice in one week.

The survey conducted by CILISOS.MY also showed that we still think we can outsmart robbers by leaving the lights on when we go out. Yes, 58.9 per cent of those surveyed admitted to still practising this.
And while most Malaysians — a whopping 75.3 per cent — say they want to start using solar power, about 46 per cent say they must sleep with the air-conditioners on every night. Even when it is not hot.

Also 37.8 per cent of Malaysian men do not want to be caught with a phone that is low on battery power so they charge their phones overnight. Every night.

About half of those surveyed have no idea what the main source of Malaysia’s energy is and most — 69.9 per cent — think it is good enough to turn off the power but leave devices or appliances plugged in.

The other surprising thing is finding out which states use the most electricity in Malaysia. Not Selangor or Kuala Lumpur but Sabah and Pahang!

Some 44 per cent of Malaysians say they still experience blackouts at home a few times a year.

And finally who are the most stingy when it comes to using electricity? Mostly single men or married men with kids.

CILISOS.MY said 22.4 per cent of those surveyed were aged 21-25 but there were respondents from a wide age group: below 17 to above 56. Of these, 66.8 per cent were male, 32 per cent were female and 1.2 per cent others.

Although every state in the country had respondents, CILISOS.MY said they’d discount Perlis and Labuan as they had less than 50 respondents each.
