GEORGE TOWN, March 9 — Five local artists will be attempting a Guinness Book of Records by painting the “world’s tallest mural” along the entire side of Penang’s iconic Komtar tower.

The artists are to embark on the 230m mural along the length of the outer metal facade of Komtar’s former bubble lift shaft at end of this month. The art will emphasise Penang’s living heritage.

“We are proud to support this project as it will definitely put us on the world map,” Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng told a news conference announcing the project at The Top in Komtar today.

The RM300,000 project is sponsored by Only World Group (OWG) and Nippon Paint.

OWG Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Richard Koh said they hoped to get the endorsement of the Guinness Book of World Records for this attempt.

He said the current record holder for the world’s tallest mural measures only at 70m high.

The mural is part of OWG’s multi-million project to revitalise Komtar. The company opened The Top @ Komtar late last year and also launched various attractions and an indoor theme park at The Top.

The five artists chosen to undertake the project are Bibichun, The Sliz, Kangblabla, Santana and IMMJN.

“Though not all of us are from Penang, all of us live here and we are proud to be part of this project to paint the story of Penang on Komtar,” said IMMJN, whose real name is Falah Naim.

The project is expected to kick off end of this month and will take between five to six months to complete.

“Maybe we can celebrate the full completion of the mural by January 2018,” Lim said.
