KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 — Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Mhd Amin Noordin Abd Aziz has disavowed responsibility for technical or safety issues related to the collapse of a bridge at the KL Eco City yesterday.
He said such matters came under the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), and not the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
Mhd Amin said DBKL is only in charge of planning approval and nothing more.
“No, it will depend on the technical department from DOSH and CIDB,” he said when asked about DBKL’s role in assessing the safety of the project.
He also said DBKL was not involved with the bridge that he categorised as a corporate social responsibility project of developer SP Setia.
Mhd Amin then suggested that the collapse could be due to the curvature of the bridge.
“I think if it was a straight bridge, the footing would be quite strong,” he added.
Mhd Amin said that DBKL has issued a stop-work order for the construction of the bridge, which connects Mid Valley Megamall and KL Eco City.
SP Setia yesterday confirmed that one worker died in the collapse of a pedestrian bridge under construction at the site. It said today that another remained missing.
According to the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue department chief operations officer Samsol Maarif Saibani yesterday, five people were injured in the incident.
On its website, KL Eco City is described as a “world class city-within-a city” on 25-acres of prime land and is a mixed development of commercial, retail space and luxury residential property.
