SHAH ALAM, Sept 28 ― The Sports Commissioner will decide if action needs to be taken against the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) and Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) once an ongoing investigation into the go-kart tragedy in Kuantan is concluded, Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said today.
“My ministry was not involved in the organisation of the event. But where we will come in is after the investigation is complete, the Sports Commissioner will decide what action needs to be taken because MAM and AAM are registered under the Sports Commissioner,” he told reporters after launching the new Proton Saga here.
He pointed out that there are two concurrent investigations on the matter currently: one by the police and another by an investigative committee set up by the Ministry of Higher Education.
A man and his daughter were killed where a go-kart rammed into spectators while they were witnessing the Educational Innovation of Motorsports and Automotive (EIMARACE) 2016 at Indera Mahkota on Sunday.
Earlier today, AAM suspended MAM for not complying with the required safety standards for the race.
The race was held on the street with plastic water bottles acting as barriers.
It was organised by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, which insisted that all safety requirements have been adhered to.
