KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — From 2017, all businesses in the Subang Jaya municipality must display the Malaysian flag from August 15 to September 16, the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) announced today.

Failure to do so will result in a compound fine of up to RM1,000, MPSJ president Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan told The Star Online today.

“This is to encourage the spirit of patriotism among residents and to enliven the National Day celebrations,” he was quoted saying.

The month-long requirement will see the flag displayed throughout both National Day, which falls on August 31, and Malaysia Day, which falls on September 16.

According to the report, the requirement to fly the Jalur Gemilang for that one-month period is stated in the council’s business licence and advertisement guidelines, which will be enforced from next year.

“It is also in line with the council’s vision of becoming the premiere international standard local authority based on smart township, business city and ideal residence in 2030,” the council chief reportedly added.

Nor Hisham said the council will conduct checks to ensure that flags or buntings of the Jalur Gemilang are displayed in an appropriate and respectable manner.
