KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 ― The DAP has accused Barisan Nasional's candidate for the Bukit Semuja state seat, John Illus of breaking election rules, claiming that he had failed to use photos of himself in the campaign posters and logos for the Sarawak election.
DAP's Steven Sim said that the party received complaints from local residents yesterday, and that John Illus's photo was nowhere to be seen in BN posters.
“Yesterday morning, we received a complaint from local residents that BN posters with the vote (X) BN logo was put up with photo of individual who is not contesting in the Bukit Semuja DUN.
“The person in the said photo is Tan Sri Adenan Satem, the BN candidate for DUN N.03 Tanjong Datu. The BN candidate for DUN Bukit Semuja is John Illus, and his photo is not in the said poster,” Sim said in a statement.
The Bukit Mertajam MP said that DAP has lodged a formal complaint with the Returning Officer of the Election Commission (EC) at the Serian District Office yesterday.
“I urge the EC to act fairly, investigate and take strict and quick action on this matter. I also urge SPR to remove the said posters at the soonest,” Sim added, referring to the EC.
The DAP MP claimed that this showed Adenan's lack of confidence in BN's own candidates for the state election.
“BN touted this Sarawak state election as an election to choose Adenan Satem to be the Chief Minister.
“It is obvious that Adenan Satem himself has no confidence for other BN candidates and had to use his own popularity as Chief Minister to campaign on their behalf,” Sim said.
The Bukit Semuja seat will see a five-cornered fight, according to the EC.
Polling in Sarawak will be held on May 7.
