KUALA LUMPUR, March 31 — Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed today urged all parties to stop speculating on the death of deputy public prosecutor Anthony Kevin Morais, saying the matter of his alleged involvement in the investigation on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) had long been disproven by the authorities.

In a statement, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner pointed out that Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali and MACC’s investigation director Datuk Azam Baki had confirmed separately in September and December last year that Kevin was never involved in the 1MDB probe.

He said Morais had been transferred out of the MACC in July 2014, a year before any investigation on 1MDB began, and had never attended any of the special task force meetings chaired by former AG Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patai.

“We would like to put the record straight that MACC has never sought advice from Kevin on both cases,” Abu Kassim said.

“Therefore, Kevin (Morais) could not be, and was not, involved in writing any charge sheet relating to 1MDB or the Prime Minister. Any statement to the contrary is completely false.

“Kevin’s death was a tragedy. He should be allowed to rest in peace and not used like a political football,” he added.

Morais’s body was found hidden in a cement-filled oil drum in Subang Jaya 13 days after he was abducted en route to his Putrajaya office from his home on September 4 last year.

At the time, it was speculated in the media that his death had to do with a charge sheet related to the 1MDB saga and the prime minister. The AG has, however, denied the existence of the document.

The issue resurfaced again this week when Australia’s ABC News aired its Four Corners documentary titled State of Fear: Money and Murder in Malaysia.

In the documentary, ABC reporters alleged that the murders of Morais and AmBank founder Hussain Ahmad Najidi were related to the 1MDB affair and the investigation into the RM2.6 billion that was deposited into Najib’s private AmBank account, which was later declared to be a political donation from a donor from the Middle East.

The documentary has since been widely shared on the Internet.
