KUALA LUMPUR, March 21 — A DAP lawmaker told Khairy Jamaluddin today to specify any changes in the procurement process when the youth and sports minister signed a Corporate Integrity Pledge in 2014, after a ministry officer was recently arrested for misappropriating RM100 million.
Serdang MP Dr Ong Kian Ming noted that Khairy had signed the Corporate Integrity Pledge on behalf of the Youth and Sports Ministry as part of an initiative by the anti-corruption national key results area under the Government Transformation Programme in May 2014.
“Can you spell out specific changes in the procurement process and / or the awarding of contracts in the Ministry of Youth and Sports as part of the Corporate Integrity Pledge?” Ong said in a statement.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested a 56-year-old official with the Youth and Sports Ministry last Friday, who was suspected of embezzling RM100 million over the past six years.
Anti-graft authorities seized assets from the suspect worth about RM20 million, including 12 vehicles, designer handbags and fine jewellery, besides freezing 69 bank accounts containing RM8.3 million.
Malay Mail reported today that the MACC was expected to interview more people in the case. The anti-graft body reportedly said the money was channeled to contractors’ companies and to the suspect’s bank accounts through the National Sports Council.
“Are any of the individuals who have been arrested by MACC still working at the Ministry of Youth and Sports or any of its related agencies?” Ong asked Khairy.
“Were any of the companies which are implicated in the MACC investigation paid by the National Sports Council / Majlis Sukan Negara, either directly or indirectly, for contracts and / or the provision of services after you became the Minister of Youth and Sports?” the MP added.
