IPOH, Feb 2 — The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) will either suspend the bus driver’s card or revoke the driving licence of a bus driver who allegedly assaulted a passenger in an incident on Jan 25.

SPAD chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said, however, that action would be taken after a thorough investigation by the police was completed.

“The police will take action against the bus driver. SPAD will take action against the bus operator as well as the bus driver based on investigations conducted by the police,” he told reporters after visiting the Amanjaya Bus Terminal here today.

The incident of a bus driver assaulting a male passenger during a trip from Melaka to Penang had gone viral on social media, as the driver was said to have become angry when the passenger was found sleeping in a chair reserved for the former.

The passenger then lodged a police report on the matter at the Melaka Tengah Police Station on Jan 28.

Meanwhile, Syed Hamid said SPAD would not compromise with private vehicle owners operating under the Uber service, if they violated regulations.

He said it was SPAD’s main objective to ensure each vehicle operating on Malaysian roads had valid licences.

He, however, declined to comment further on the matter to avoid any further confusion, as there had been many statements issued pertaining the ride-hailing application.

SPAD had previously stated that although the Uber app was not illegal, the offence occurred when drivers did not possess public service vehicle (PSV) licences. — Bernama
