KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 — Subang MP Sivarasa Rasiah confirmed today that he will be charged with sedition next Tuesday over a speech he made during the #KitaLawan rally back in March.
The PKR lawmaker, who was served the notice today at the Dang Wangi police headquarters after giving his statement, said he will be charged under Section 4 (1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948 at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court.
“For me, this is the usual attempt to intimidate members of Parliaments from the opposition and activists to continue to speak out but we will fight this as usual,” he told Malay Mail Online over the phone.
He added that he will also lodge a complaint with the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which is a global organisation for parliamentarians across the world. The organisation is also looking into the sedition cases of all the MPs as well as those charged under the Peaceful Assembly Act.
Sivarasa, a lawyer, is expected to be charged for allegedly saying during the March 7 #KitaLawan rally that the judiciary was used by Umno to incriminate PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said that the police had on September 6 requested his presence the following day to record his statement but he could not make it at the time as he was still recovering from surgery.
Two days later, Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah, Bersih 2.0 committee member Mandeep Singh, PKR Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin, PKR Teja state assemblyman Chang Lih Kang, Semambu state assemblyman Lee Chean Chung, Jingga 13 leader Fariz Musa, Adam Adli and Rozan Azen Mat Rasip, aide to PKR Batu parliamentarian Tian Chua, were charged under Section 4(2)(c) of the Peaceful Assembly Act over their involvement in #KitaLawan rallies between February and March. They are liable to a maximum RM10,000 fine if found guilty.
Former PAS Youth treasurer Fakhrulrazi Mohd Mokhtar, on the other hand, was charged with sedition for a speech he made during the protest.
