HULU TERENGGANU, Aug 7 — Opposition parties should state their stand on the proposal by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) that there be a law on the declaration of political funding.
The MCMC proposed the act last Wednesday to enable the agency to conduct investigations into any political party in the country which received funds from various sources.
Umno Youth Vice Chief Khairul Azwan Harun said if the opposition was honest and transparent, they should state their stand on this issue which they had once opposed.
“Umno Youth challenges the political parties to declare their stand and not just talk about supporting the MCMC just to be popular and hiding their real intentions.
“If the act has been studied, well thought-out, takes into consideration all parties and is seen as the best way, Umno Youth fully supports the MCMC’s proposal,” he told reporters after officiating the Hulu Terengganu Umno Youth Delegates’ Meeting here today.
Also present was Terengganu State Umno Youth Chief, Johari Abu Bakar.
Khairul Azwan said before the act is drawn up, it should first be studied and all aspects considered including the sensitivities of the contributors.
“The best time is when a study has been done and the opinions of various parties considered, and not because we are trapped, pressured or influenced,” he said.
Yesterday, Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob challenged opposition parties to make the same stand and that they should not worry about declaring the sources of their political funds.
The statement follows a proposal by the MCMC that the act which was first proposed by the government in 2008 be drawn up to enable it to disclose detailed information about the contributors to political funds.
The meeting was attended by more than 530 delegates from 135 branches in the Hulu Terengganu division. — Bernama
