KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 ― United States President Barack Obama will return for a second visit to Malaysia in November for the 27th Asean Summit.
Local daily News Straits Times quoted Malaysian Ambassador to the United States Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin as saying that Obama will visit as dialogue partner in the Asean Economic Summit.
“The full agenda of the visit is being worked out, but barring any unforeseen circumstances, the US president will be in KL in November,” he said to reporters yesterday.
Praising the bi-lateral ties that Malaysia has with US, Awang added that Obama’s second visit in a span of two years was proof the nations were getting better as Obama is the first US president to arrive here in 48 years.
Awang added the US was paying more attention to Malaysia and the Asean region as it “sees great potential for trade and investment here”.
Obama arrived in Malaysia for an official visit on April 26 last year and became the first serving US president to do so since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966.
The US is also paying greater attention to the region as part of Obama’s “pivot” to Asia policy.
