KUALA SELANGOR, June 6 — PAS today confirmed its decision to sever ties with DAP while still remaining in Pakatan Rakyat (PR) with PKR, after its motion to do so was approved without debate.
In the list of the motions to be debated in its muktamar, or annual congress, today, the decision involving tahaluf siyasi (political consensus) were among three already accepted.
“Central PAS and Syura Council must sever ties and political cooperation with DAP, but remains with PKR in PR,” said part of the motion tabled by its Ulama wing and Tumpat division.
The motion also urged PAS to strengthen PR and called on its PR allies to respect each party’s stand and policies.
The motion said that the step must be taken as DAP had failed to respect the principle of “agree to disagree”, and had insulted both the party and its president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
Other reasons included the decision of Sabah and Sarawak DAP to sever ties with their PAS counterparts, and DAP’s lack of respect for PAS’ Islamic struggle.
On Wednesday, PAS’s powerful clergy wing approved the emergency motion unanimously by its over 600 members, which was reminiscent of a similar resolution made months ago by the top leadership of the DAP to cut all ties with PAS president Hadi but remain in PR.
Yesterday, PAS’s Nasruddin Hassan explained that its clergy wing had proposed so as it can no longer tolerate being “slapped around” by its PR ally DAP.
The two former allies have been openly hostile over the Islamist party’s ambition to enforce hudud in Kelantan, among others.
