GOMBAK, June 3 — Even on his deathbed, the late Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat had wanted PAS to stay the course on hudud, his youngest brother Nik Radzi Nik Mat said today.
Nik Radzi, when making his case for the implementation of the controversial Islamic penal code in Kelantan, said because it was his brother’s dying wish, he hopes PAS would continue pursuing this dream.
“I wish we would stick with hudud in Kelantan,” Nik Radzi said while debating the keynote address of wing chief Datuk Dr Mahfodz Mohamad in the annual congress, or muktamar, of PAS’s Ulama wing.
“When Tok Guru was going in and out of hospital, what he told me was: ‘continue’,” he added, using one of Nik Aziz’s moniker.
The Kelantan delegate then paused for a while, appearing on the verge of tears, as shouts of “takbir” filled the hall.
Nik Radzi also took aim at Muslims who have objected to the controversial law, and the DAP for its opposition towards the east coast state’s hudud plan.
Among others, Nik Radzi slammed BFM radio presenter Aisyah Tajuddin for criticising Kelantan’s hudud in March, mimicking a scene from her video with interfaith group Projek Dialog.
The young Muslim journalist had earned heavy criticism over a satirical video produced by the popular business radio station where she was seen criticising the PAS government’s bid to introduce the law in Kelantan.
Earlier today, the PAS wing slammed party members and leaders who it claimed were trying to stall the implementation of the controversial Islamic penal code in Kelantan, by relying on “academic excuses and arguments”.
On March 19, the Kelantan state assembly approved the Shariah Criminal Code (II) (1993) 2015 Enactment with 31 votes from PAS lawmakers supported by 12 from Umno.
PAS is now seeking to debate two private members’ bills in Parliament to enable Kelantan to enforce the Islamic criminal code widely called hudud ― one will seek approval for the state to legislate punishment for crimes under the Penal Code.
