GEORGE TOWN, March 10 — PKR Youth launched today a signature campaign to petition the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong for a royal pardon to free jailed Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The party’s wing chief Dr Afif Bahardin called on all Malaysians who value freedom and justice in the country to add their names to the petition, which will also be made available online soon.

“This petition is a follow-up to the petition submitted by Anwar’s family to seek a royal pardon for Anwar,” he said.

Dr Afif did not give a cut-off date for its campaign, or mention the targeted number of signatures the party hoped to collect, saying only that his party hoped to submit it to Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah “as soon as possible”.

He hoped the Agong would consider and approve the petition to free Anwar.

Anwar was jailed five years on February 10 when his appeal to the Federal Court against his sodomy conviction was dismissed.

His family submitted a petition seeking a royal pardon on his behalf on February 24 so Anwar remains a Permatang Pauh MP and opposition leader pending the decision of the Agong in response to the petition.

He would have been disqualified as an MP exactly 14 days after he was sent to prison.
