JOHOR BAHARU, Oct 27 — The Johor police have arrested 2,149 individuals in 3,836 raids on premises suspected to be involved in illegal gambling activities since January this year.
Johor CID chief Datuk Hasnan Hassan said 4,805 illegal gambling machines and cash of RM171,541 were also seized during the raids.
"Of the 2,149 individuals, 109 have been charged in court, 60 of whom were charged under the Open Gambling House Act 1953, while the other 49 were charged under Johor Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment 1998," he said in a statement here today.
Hasnan said to ensure that illegal gambling would not become rampant in the state, the electricity supply to 97 premises suspected to be involved in such activities had been cut off since January until now.
He said continuous action, including the integrated operation mounted with the cooperation from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, local authorities and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), proved that the police were serious in combating illegal gambling.
Hasnan also called on the people in the state not to go to any family entertainment outlets which offer gambling activities, and those with information on such an outlet were requested to inform the police at 07-225 4677 or 07-225 4648 or through the Johor police's Facebook page. — Bernama
