KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 — Police have launched “Ops Albatross” to nab the hackers who used malware to siphon over RM3 million from the automated teller machines (ATM) of several banks.
Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mortadza Nazarene said the suspects started by opening the ATM top panel using a common key.
The male suspects believed to be foreigners then inserted a compact disc (CD) into the CD-ROM to spread the “ulssm.exe” malware.
“After removing the CD, the panel was closed and codes were keyed in using the keyboard after receiving a phone call from a friend.
“This allowed them to withdraw money from the ATMs,” he said in a statement here, today.
Mortadza said the ATM card slots were then stuffed with SIM cards, paper or cigarette butts to block withdrawals by other users.
Yesterday, the police said a syndicate escaped with more than RM3 million after hacking into 17 ATMs in Selangor, Melaka and Johor.
There was no reported loss by bank account holders in the hacking incident believed to have been carried out by a syndicate from South America.
