KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 — Malaysia has signed a deal to strengthen its partnership with Australia in the ongoing search for the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said today.
Liow said the memorandum signed by the two countries lays down the “framework and broad parameters” of their joint efforts to find the Boeing 777 plane in the southern Indian Ocean.
“In this regard Malaysia will provide the necessary financial contribution towards the search effort and match Australia’s commitment,” he said in a statement today, but did not provide specific details.
Earlier today, news agency Reuters reported Liow saying that Malaysia has already committed and spent around A$15 million (RM44.3 million) and would share the contract costs for the search efforts with Australia.
Dutch engineering company Fugro had this month won a tender to map the sea floor and aid an underwater search for signs of the MH370.
Months of searching had failed to yield any wreckage of the MH370 which mysteriously disappeared on March 8 together with 239 people on board.
