PETALING JAYA, June 17 — It has been five days since the start of the World Cup in Brazil and the social media has been abuzz since “the greatest show on earth” kicked off.
While most conversations are about players and games, pictures of Japan fans cleaning up the stadium after the match have gone viral on social media, especially on Twitter.
Despite seeing their team lose 2-1 to Ivory Coast on Saturday, the fans were seen picking up trash from the stands, earning the admiration of many.
Twitter user Saravy (@Saravy3) tweeted: “That’s so respectful of them. The rest of us could only learn from their example.”
Bhushan Shende (@bhushanshende) tweeted: “they have put even developed nations to shame! #Respect”
A Japanese fan, Sakura (@sakura_tokio) tweeted: “Thank you for posting this! We lost the match and were disappointed but that made us proud of ourselves. Arigato!”
But there were some who were ignorant of the fact Japan was playing in the competition.
Twitter user Value Factors (@Value_Factors) had asked: “Which match? Japan aren’t in the World Cup.”
There were also several pictures that highlighted the flaws at this year’s World Cup.
A picture of slums in Rio de Janeiro with the Maracana Stadium serving in the background indicated why many in Brazil protested against the hosting of the tournament.
Eduardo Amaro Silva had through his Twitter handle @frozzen said: “One photo can speak a thousand words #worldcuproblems”
Another user slammed Fifa.
Responding to the picture of the slums, Maab Connor (@Maab_Connor) tweeted: “This is EXACTLY why #FIFA needs to stop taking all proceeds from the game!!!”
