KUALA LUMPUR, March 17 — The Sessions Court here today sentenced a mechanic to 24 years in prison for the attempted murder of his girlfriend’s daughter and an infant in January.

Judge Ahmad Bache sentenced Mohd Afizi Abdul Rahman, 27, to 12 years for each attempt after he changed his plea to guilty.

The court ordered him to serve the sentences concurrently from the date of his arrest on January 22.

Mohd Afizi, who worked in a bicycle shop, was charged with the attempted murders of his girlfriend’s daughter Nur Airis Qaliesya, aged one year and three months, and Nur Dia Syazana, the two-month-old baby of the woman’s neighbour.

He was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code with committing the offence in a house at the Desa Rejang People’s Housing Project in Setapak Jaya, Sentul near here between 1am and 2.30am on January 21.

Earlier during the proceedings, defence lawyer Chris Kooi Wei Kit appealed for a lesser sentence submitting that his client had been under the influence of drugs at the time and had been provoked by an argument with his girlfriend and her mother.

Another contributing factor was Mohd Afizi’s lack of education, he added.

However, deputy public prosecutor Norazlin Mohamad Yusoff applied for a harsher sentence as the offence was serious and perpetrated against defenceless children.

Norazlin said although Mohd Afizi intended to burn his girlfriend, his act of setting the whole room ablaze knowing the toddler and infant were in it, showed that he had the same intention against them.

On February 18, Mohd Afizi was charged with murder following the death of his girlfriend Saliza Saidin, 29, on February 1 after she was warded for 12 days in the Kuala Lumpur Hospital’s Burns Unit. — Bernama
