IPOH, Feb 26 — Police investigating the murder of DAP member Wong Kong Ting in Manjung recently have ruled out a political or racial motive.
Perak police chief Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said: “Our investigation will now focus on the deceased’s social outings, work related activities and maybe family relationships.”
Wong, 56, was a contractor involved in widespread clearing and replanting of palm oil trees.
“We are looking at his personal interests to help us in the investigation,” Acryl Sani said.
He said a man had been picked up in Manjung to assist in the investigation.
“We hope to get a clearer picture from information obtained from the man and the leads to work on,” Acryl Sani said.
Wong, a former DAP branch chairman, was gunned down outside his house in Kampung Jering, Ayer Tawar.
Several shots were fired by unknown men on a motorcycle at about 10pm before they escaped.
Acryl also said three men shot dead by police in a shootout on the Bruas-Parit road on Sunday had yet to be identified.
“We have checked the names of individuals, criminals and former criminals but none matched those of the three men,” he said.
An Ops Cantas team spotted the men acting suspiciously in a car and tried to intercept them.
The occupants opened fire and fled but were later cornered. They died in an exchange of gunfire with police.
