MELAKA, Jan 25 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will increase its enforcement personnel by 50 per cent for undercover operations during the Chinese New Year festive season, said director-general Datuk Ismail Ahmad.

He said JPJ personnel would disguise as bus passengers to monitor traffic offences, a method which was proven to be effective over the past two years.

Declining to state the actual number of personnel who would take part in the undercover operation, he said the JPJ would station 1,800 personnel and enforcement officers in 157 accident-prone areas throughout the festive season.

“They will be on duty periodically, during the operation which began yesterday and ends on Feb 9. We have doubled the number of enforcement teams ... previously, a state would have four teams but now there are eight,” he told reporters after launching the 1JPJ Youth Squad (SM1JPJ) here tonight.

The SM1JPJ will provide awareness to the community on traffic offences and road safety. Melaka is the 12th state to launch the squad. — Bernama
